oil on board, 18″ x 24 inches

$1,850

Although unsigned, this technically accurate painting is probably by George Race, a self taught artist who recorded numerous steam tugboats and herring trawlers from Lowestoft and Grimsby. He is the last of the pierhead artists who lived on commissions from working captains and crews.

The purpose of the elevated pulleys and chains, which could have been intended for construction, cranage, buoy service or trawling herring, is unclear, but it is most likely that they are outrigging for shrimp.
