Nerly came from Berlin and Hamburg, but he studied under Karl and Eugene von Blaas and painted in Italy most of his life. He specialized in mellow, detailed and evocative coastal scenes, including many vistas of Venice.
The tall tower in the distance in this painting might be the San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, but it is more likely one of the towers along the Amalfi coast.
