oil on canvas, 22′ x 27 inches signed J. F. and inscribed Hale

$1,850

The unique dramatic and overpowering style of this stormy landscape identifies it as the work of Fairman, whose initials here are identical to those on his 1970 painting of the Presidential Range, New Hampshire.

An immigrant from Glasgow, Fairman had an eclectic and distinguished career as a prolific artist, art critic, teacher and even a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. He traveled widely and painted the landscapes of England, Europe and Palestine as well as the United States.

This picture displays his innovative impasto style and combines traditional composition with impressionistic brushwork and coloring.
