This delicate low key portrait, in which both the child and the dog have charming expressive faces, is possibly by Julius Ludwig Asher (1804-1878).

Asher studied at Hamburg under Gerdt Hardorf and Leo Lehmann, is associated with the Düsseldorf School of painting and worked on the frescoes of the Glyptothek.
