Despite his family wanting to make him a lawyer, Petitjean was determined to be an artist and by 1874 could hold a solo exhibit at the Salon des Artistes. He chose to paint in several ports along the Atlantic coast and also inland, like this neo-impressionist study of SemurĀ in Burgundy. He exhibited widely until 1914 , was awarded many medals and was named a Knight in the Legion of Honor.
